Starting working life at 15: the challenges and opportunities according to Rafael, an apprentice at PWP

At just 15 years old, Rafael chose to dive into the world of work by starting an apprenticeship as a commercial employee at PWP SA. Originally from Avenches, he shares his experience with sincerity today. An inspiring testimony that highlights the reality of a young person in training within a dynamic and demanding company.

Why such young learning?

Rafael leaves no doubt about his professional goal: he wants to become an accountant. To achieve this, he has chosen apprenticeships as a direct route into the profession. «I found out about PWP through orientation.ch. The fact that it was close to home and that the apprenticeship programme was varied convinced me.»

This considered choice perfectly illustrates a generation that is looking for tangible, practical, and stimulating learning environments.

Entering the professional world: a real change of pace

From the very first days at PWP, the change was radical. «It was complicated at first, especially because of the hours.» Rafael highlights the striking contrast between school life and professional life: longer days, a different structure and new expectations.

Fortunately, the evolution has been rapid. «At first, I didn't have many tasks, but over time, I gained skills and, therefore, responsibilities.»

Organising your time between school and work

Reconciling the two worlds isn't always easy. Rafael organises his school time around his work schedule, in the evenings and at the weekend. «The most difficult part is really managing homework and tests on top of company work. But we adapt.»

His testimony perfectly illustrates a common challenge for all apprentices: learning to juggle multiple responsibilities from a young age.

Learning by doing: a lever for autonomy

«What struck me the most was maintaining a professional attitude at all times and taking on responsibilities.» Rafael notably participated in a project for a supplier («Kinnegrip») where he contributed to adjusting sales prices – a rewarding task that greatly motivated him.

It benefits from quality support: «My sales trainer shares some tasks with me and we can find an agreement that suits both of us.»

A supportive team, a rewarding environment

At PWP, Rafael feels he belongs. He describes a caring atmosphere and a real team spirit: «My colleagues support me when necessary, and they can count on me to get tasks done despite my age.»

He insists on the autonomy he's been granted and the absence of unnecessary pressure. This climate of trust appears to be a significant driver of his motivation.

And after? A vision already clear

Despite his young age, Rafael has a structured vision for his future. He plans to pursue professional maturity, with the ultimate goal of becoming an accountant.

His advice to those who hesitate

For young people who are still asking themselves questions, Rafael is adamant: «I recommend apprenticeships over the gym. The courses are more accessible, you get paid, and most importantly, you gain experience.»

It also highlights an important point: «Some trainers or colleagues in other companies sometimes forget that apprentices are beginners. You have to remain understanding and provide support, not demand too much all at once.»

An example of successful integration

Through Rafael's testimony, we discover not only a motivated and clear-sighted young man, but also the values championed by PWP SA: trust, the passing on of knowledge, progressive autonomy and listening. It is also a strong signal sent to future apprentices, parents and institutions: apprenticeships are a concrete, structuring path full of opportunities.
